Italian Waterfall (Isola Liri) - Mosaic Design
This image shows the mosaic design at approx. 1 pixel to 1.5 mm, including grout lines and tile colour blocks (see the colour note below) but has been adjusted in size by your browser to fit on the page, blurring the detail.
To see the design detail, click on the picture which should open the mosaic design at original size in a new browser window or tab.
You can then use the scrollbars and your browser's zoom function to view the design.
You should see a grid of coloured squares representing the tiles, with sharp coloured lines between representing the grout lines.
Sometimes your browser may not scale the design very well at some zoom factors, either blurring the lines, missing some lines out or showing at differing thicknesses - you can always save the picture to your computer to view in your imaging software.
A tip for IE8: try clicking/not clicking on the picture before zooming (bottom right in the status bar) for differing results.

Our Mosaics
Our objective is to bring the beauty of mosaic art into more homes and offices than ever before, by offering a wide range of affordable designs available in a choice of formats and sizes.
To this end we have invested extensively in computer assisted mosaic design technologies, developing our own specialist algorithms and methods to optimise the selection of tile colours.

Our mosaic designs use the traditional "Opus Regulatum" style of tiles laid out in a regular pattern, like squares on a chess board.
Our "Ready to Tile" mosaic art is prepared using the "Reverse Double Direct" method, a variation of the "Double Indirect" method, where tiles are first laid out in the design and attached by their top face to temporary paper sheets using a water soluble adhesive. A permanent high strength mesh is then applied, using waterproof adhesive, to the underside of the tiles. The paper sheets are left on in transit as an extra security holding the design together, as well as being marked to show the orientation and the position of the tile sheet in the mosaic design. The sheets can then be pressed, mesh down, into the tile adhesive, transferring chunks of the design in one go, maintaining the tile layout. Once the tile adhesive is set, the temporary paper sheets can be removed by damping the paper to dissolve the water soluble glue. Once the paper and glue are removed, the tiles can be grouted to complete the mosaic.

Specification
- Mosaic Tiles:
- 10mm x 10mm x 3-4mm thick vitreous glass tiles, fired to a high temperature for strength and durability, they are frost proof and waterproof, UVA, shatter and fade resistant.
The top of the tiles are bevelled around the edges for a low-slip finish, and have shaping on the back for excellent adhesion. This makes them suitable for use inside and outside, including home/office walls and floors, garage and garden walls, paths, patios and swimming pools.
- Tile Sheets:
- The mosaic is supplied pre-prepared in sheet form. The tiles are attached to a strong fibreglass mesh with a waterproof adhesive to form a sheet. The whole sheet can be tiled in one go, including the mesh, similar to traditional single colour mosaic tile sheets. Unlike single colour sheets, there is also a paper sheet applied to the top of the tiles with water soluble glue. This helps maintain the tile arrangement in transit, and is marked to show the position and orientation of the sheet within the mosaic design. After the tiles have been fixed, this paper and glue can be soaked off, before grouting to finish.
Installation
Ready for self tiling, or by your local tiler. It is usually better to leave the paper on while laying the sheets, mesh side first, into the tile adhesive on your wall/floor. Once the adhesive has set, soak off the paper, wipe any glue residue off the tiles with a damp cloth, then grout as usual.
Note: the thickness of these tiles at 3-4mm may be less than any surrounding tiles, so giving a recessed effect to your picture. This can be avoided by skimming with tile adhesive and allowing to set, which is also recommended to level the surface.
Floor installation (pedestrian areas only) requires more careful substrate preparation and the use of suitable adhesives and grouts. Despite the durability of the glass tiles, floor mosaics in areas of excessively heavy traffic, such as public entrances to offices, will be subject to wear and will require increased maintenance. We can supply a full spares pack with your mosaic, including agreed numbers of spare tiles of each colour and a detailed design plan for repairs.
A good quality White, flexible, waterproof tile adhesive, suitable for small vitreous glass tiles is recommended. Grout should be suitable for small grout lines between vitreous glass tiles, anti-mould, waterproof and flexible, in the colour of your choice. Light-medium grey is most common, providing a neutral background for tiles of many colours, however there are a wide range of colour grouts available. The grout colour can be chosen to lighten or darken the overall mosaic, to contrast or colourise the tone of the mosaic. We can provide representations of your mosaic with other grout colours.
We can advise on, or even supply, recommended tile adhesives and grouts. We can also supply matching tile sheets of single colour tiles for the surrounding areas around your mosaic.
Colour Note:
The colours shown are for guide use only.
It is impossible to give an accurate indication of the finished mosaic colours: the tile colour shades vary from batch to batch, supplier to supplier (as is common with all fired glass). Most have a speckled appearance, with very small white(ish) specks and bubbles, that affects the colour shade when seen from a distance. Vitreous tiles are semi-transparent/translucent/reflective, which varies in extent from colour to colour, so the colour shade seen is also affected by lighting conditions, adhesive and grout colour, etc. Finished grout colours will also vary due to mixing, texture, application or batch variations.

These factors make it very difficult to match a tile or grout colour to an accurate computer colour definition. Even then, the colour you see on your screen will not be exactly the same as we see on our screens, due to differences in browser, display and screen settings.
We have gone to great lengths to indicate reasonably realistic tile/grout colours based on the colour impression from a distance under good light, when fixed with white adhesive and light-medium grey grout.
As with all mosaics, the artistry is in the overall picture impression, rather than the specific use of colours.
Finish Quality Note:
This is a Home Studio crafted product.
Every due care and attention is taken to ensure a high quality product with a professional finish. However, as with any Home Studio crafted product more minor irregularities are to be expected than for a mass produced factory item.
Many of the tiles (despite their factory manufacture) have slightly varying shapes, irregular edges or minor edge chips. As part of our quality control procedures, all tiles are visually checked prior to product assembly. Some irregular edged tiles can be ground back to shape, while broken, deformed, excessively chipped or irregular edged tiles are replaced.
Tile mounting to mesh and paper backings are carried out by hand, inevitably resulting in minor variations in tile positions, orientation, alignment etc.
Such variations and irregularities only add to the artistic charm of our completed mosaics.
